Great stuff!!

A surprise UK hit indeed as in The USA it failed to make Billboard's Hot 100 "Pop" chart at all, though it was a respectable enough R&B hit at #21.

I have no idea how or why this became such a massive hit. She was basically unknown in the UK. 'I'm a Sucker for Your Love' with Rick James did make #43 the year before. At the end of 1980 'I Need Your Lovin'' peaked at #28, it was to be her final Top 50 UK hit. None of her albums ever charted either. Of course it was not the only time that Motown had a mystery one off massive hit in the UK. Yvonne Fair, who had no previous history in the UK, stormed to #5 in 1976. Sadly she never charted again! In 1982 Charlene Duncan shocked me by having a UK #1 with the tedious dirge 'I've Never Been To Me'. Thankfully she never troubled the UK charts again! (Sorry Eric, I know that you have a soft spot for her.)

From what I remember "Behind The Groove" got jumped on by the (mainly SE England based) Jazz/Funk/Soul/Disco scene.  It certainly got played a lot and I think that the impetus was enough to propel the song into the lower reaches of the chart when it was released and for it to get added to Radio One's playlist etc. etc. etc.

Yvonne Fair was a surprise.

Thanks for posting Humboldt. Never realised it made it that far up the charts. Have to agree with you concerning that Charlene track, The Temptation did a cover which I much prefer. As  for Yvonne Fair what a great track, I can remember it being played on the radio (just) ;D.
