So many great tracks on the third album.

The last, fourth, LP has it's moments. There's the remake of YOU KEEP ME HANGING ON, and it starts with this lovely uptempo tune (it sounds a bit thin here, probably down to the up-loader's equipment):-

Then there's this duet with G C Cameron, that makes me wish they had done more together:-

The wonderful third album is just a joy from start to finish.

Here are a couple of tasters, first a lovely ballad:-

The album starts off with this bouncy number, full of Tata's trademark vocal gymnastics:-

I love her!

Snake, I was heartbroken when the record buying public embraced Teena (one-note) Marie and shunned the effervescent Tata. Critics loved Ms Vega but it didn't seem to help.

Perhaps the producer of the four albums was not quite up to scratch....

Eric

I recall loving a Teena Marie track.but didn't follow up on her.
I did play the Tata Vega ....but it was a long time ago, but I'm sure I will remember some of it.
Wasn't there a track called "heaven calling"...or similar? that brings back memories.
give it day or two...I'll be full speed ahead

This is your "heaven calling" song, Snake, or at least the first half, before it gets funky.

Tata wrote this and I consider it the best thing she ever did - just love those complicated and over-lapping vocals - the sentiment of the song gets me every time.

She started a fifth album for the label when Motown resigned her in 1983.  A couple of those completed tracks, produced by Nolen and Crossley, were added as bonus tracks to the digital download release of her "Givin' All My Lovin'" album but they weren't up to much, in my opinion.

It has been a longggg time since I have heard or played anything by Tata although I do have all four of her Motown albums on vinyl. If I recall, my favorite track was titled something like "Just Keep Thinking About You" but I could not even hazard a guess as to whether that was on her first, second or whatever album. I never heard much from or about Teena Marie but from the little I do know, I think Tata was better.

It was on her third album "Try My Love".

HEATWAVE has a note that says Tata's single version of YOU KEEP ME HANGIN' ON was changed on the second pressing and the B-side became the A-side. This is it:-

This version of the song is more familiar:-

But which came first?

Gwen Owens' version was recorded first in 74/75 in Motown South.

Thanks, Ivor. Presumably it is a Jobete song.
