A "chequered career hit wise" indeed, but with two UK #1s and three or four other substantial hits he did quite well and out-performed many other Motown acts I could mention ... plus many will know him as the songwriter of "My Girl", "Get Ready" and dozens of other evergreens.
I can't see me attending the event as I have an aversion to these multi-day "festivals" held in fields, however if he were appearing next door to where you live John I'd definitely turn up (I could call in for a wee dram or three before the gig).
I did see Smokey "Live" around the end of the '70s at Baileys in Leicester ("Shoe Soul" was his current single at the time) and it was very well attended .. he asked the audience if anyone had anything they particularly wanted him to sing and he ended up doing an acapella version of "Bad Girl".
