Yes, quite an oddity for Motown ... I'm familiar with the Michael Denton version as it is on one of the TCMS CDs but I'm not sure if I've ever owned a copy of that "Portrait Of The Originals" LP.

"Just Another Morning" actually reminds me of "Love Years Coming" by The Strawberry Children from 1967 which came from the same production team as those 5th Dimension hits.  "Love Years Coming" was written by Jimmy Webb and he was rumoured to be singing on it ... I wonder if it was one of the songs that  he walked away from Motown with ... wouldn't that be an amusing thought. :)

The Strawberry Children song is new to me.  Pretty but not really memorable. I don't own any CD's by the Originals other than a 'best of'. They are a group that has always been a mystery to me!

Hi I have 3 CDs by The Originals think they were Japanese releases and a best of. They did some odd tracks but then they did some great tracks, I love their vocal harmonies.

Very mysterious indeed, I get the impression that Motown used them more as "session singers" than as a conventional group.

"Green Grow The Lilacs" was another "sunshine pop" tune that sounded more like something that The Association might have recorded than a "Motown" effort.

Hmm! Not a fan of Green Grow The Lilacs, but still like the vocals. Would be great if they released all their albums on CD.

On another note The Originals released a few albums after they left Motown 'Another Time, Another Place', 'Come Away With Me' and 'Yesterday and Today' has anyone heard them, are they any good?

Prompted by this thread I've managed to get my hands on a CD copy of this LP ... the one I got is a US release from 1992 ... they seem to be in short supply so best of luck to anyone else who is trying to find one.

I know I had a copy of another Originals LP, apart from "Green Grow The Lilacs" which I still have, back in the '70s but I can't remember whether it was this one or "Definitions" so I'm not sure whether I'm hearing some  of the tracks for the first time or not.  Having played it a few times my suspicions about "My Way" being the track to make me cringe are proving to be true.  I'm not too impressed with their versions of "Wichita Lineman" or "Aquarius" either ... not a patch on Glen Campbell or The 5th Dimension IMHO.

Otherwise it is a good solid collection, I was already very familiar with "The Bells", "I Like Your Style", "Don't Stop Now" and "I'll Wait For You" of course.

One curiosity on there is "You Want Hearts & Flowers" which is pure Curtis Mayfield/Impressions ... :) ...
