A couple of early '70s tunes that became popular with the NS crowd four or five years or so after their original US release …





Looking through my old copies of "Blues & Soul" I see that back in '76 Dave Godin was complaining that most NS DJs had dropped the James Fountain track from their playlists the moment it had received a UK release, thus denying it of that "final push" that might have seen it charting.   

Now what is it that I was saying earlier?  :)

Now that is obscure, I can't imagine I'd ever heard it before and it seems it was never released which is a pity as I would have lapped it up back in the '70s/early '80s.  It makes me wonder what else is out there.

This is one that is reputed to have been instrumental in sending Levine and Company all "modern" in '75 ... This is the 7" version which I think has yet to appear on CD as the compilers always put the instrumental "Disco" version or long remixed versions on them. 

Crown Heights Affair .... "Dreaming A Dream"


Which brings to mind this one from Idris Muhummad, which I thought was by Crown Heights the first time I heard it ... HUGE with the Jazz/Funk crowd and even got to #42 on the UK "Pop" chart ... :) ...

Mr Snakepit.  There is a version of "Dreaming A Dream" on the Blackpool Mecca/Ian Levine "Reaching For The Best" Double CD, but it isn't the same as the 45 version (different lyrics and half a minute shorter).

 :) I have so much stuff, I'll never play them all.

went to a NS night last Saturday ( met an old Soul buddy at a funeral some weeks ago). Revived a spark in me. Turns out there are several venues not TOO far away, sensibly spaced out on different nights, so I might do a few. A Sunday afternoon session 2-7 , via tram, really getting me excited...I can have a few drinks. Others might require the car, or Tram but NO beer)
Then today, in my Wednesday Walking group, whilst talking to a lady on the walk, we somehow got around to NS ( God knows how). Seems she was into the scene post Wigan and was quite knowledgeable ...i was very surprised. She talked about the Mecca going Jazz/Funk...what a woman. Might do her a few CDrs.
The group also has a lady who goes back to the very early days, in fact she courted one of the main Rare ( as it was then) DJs on the scene....Wheel/Torch etc. I think he is still going. However she has never raised the topic since we talked months ago.

in fact I noticed the 70s got more floor action....I put that down to a younger age group ( younger than my 66 that is!)...they were in their 50s LOL
