Northern Soul 70s style

The mid 70s saw a split within the ranks of NS club goers, led by Ian Levine changing the Blackpool Mecca playlist to concentrate on contemporary 70s tracks.
There were many great tunes played as a result.

I suppose I should have started this thread with the BIG record that prompted Levine to change  to 70s stuff....And starting a civil war in the process.

This would be what became known, in NS Circles, as "Modern Soul".

I think Mr Levine's change of tack was largely influenced by the fact that in '74/5/6 there was a revival in The US of the kind of uptempo Soul/R&B that was likely to appeal to the NS Types.  There were a lot of great uplifting tunes in that period, some of which were sufficiently "left field" to be picked up by Mr Levine.

I believe that this one was popular everywhere and I've never understood how it failed to become a major British chart hit … :)


This one I used to play to death and IMHO has one of the best intros ever ….


This one became a major US hit and the group was championed by Mr Levine but was (unsurprisingly?) a "step too far" for some … :) ...

Still gets called Modefn Soul...45 years.later.
There was often a Modern Room...and plenty of uplifting tunes from this era..
But not DISCO....ie tailor made ...these were great dance tracks

Nine times...a fav of mine...should have been pop hit.

Interesting observation Mr Snakepit, are you talking about then or now? … this one was about as "Disco" as you could get and got played, as did Sylvester's "You Make Me Feel Mighty Real" (one that Mr Levine has subsequently dismissed as being "too commercial") .. the video is a bit strange as it starts off with a brief appearance by Michael Jackson ….

Don't we all SWI … I still have my UK 45 from 1975.  The song was originally released in The US in 1973, was a reasonable sized hit (#35 on BB's R&B chart), and might have been much bigger if it weren't for the fact that Mr Soule was white and didn't feel it was appropriate for him to promote it with personal appearances.  I'm not sure how much the NS scene had to do with its belated UK issue, probably not much, I used to find it quite frustrating in '73/'74 that some of the new releases weren't appearing on NS playlists as often they seemed to have the right qualities.  But I guess the main thrust of the NS scene at that time was the uncovering of obscurities from the '60s.

Here's another one from that 1973/4 era … pure musical heaven ...

I can't keep up. Have always liked 'Cherchez La Femme' which I thought was a hit in the UK - duh! Love the George Soulé record which I had never heard before even though it reminds me of many other songs from that time.

I am not familiar with either of those tracks.

Sound like a bridge from modern soul to Jazz Funk scene....a step too far me personally.
