This would be what became known, in NS Circles, as "Modern Soul".
I think Mr Levine's change of tack was largely influenced by the fact that in '74/5/6 there was a revival in The US of the kind of uptempo Soul/R&B that was likely to appeal to the NS Types. There were a lot of great uplifting tunes in that period, some of which were sufficiently "left field" to be picked up by Mr Levine.
I believe that this one was popular everywhere and I've never understood how it failed to become a major British chart hit …

This one I used to play to death and IMHO has one of the best intros ever ….
This one became a major US hit and the group was championed by Mr Levine but was (unsurprisingly?) a "step too far" for some …
