The album Vintage Stock was, IMHO, one of the best Mary Wells albums Motown released.

Was this first time that previously unissued material was released on album?

Some of those familiar songs were passed over to other artists. The high standard of the tracks makes one long for more and wonder what would have happened had Mary stayed with Motown.

Was Vintage Stock released in both mono and stereo?

I think that most LPs at that time contained material that had been previously unreleased SWI

I never managed to get hold of a copy but I agree it has some fine tracks on it. Her career would have been so different .

One of the "new" tracks on Vintage Stock was One Block From Heaven. I remember suggesting to Ian Levine that he re-make that song as he was a DJ at Heaven in those days.

I'm not sure of the time line of this material, im assuming it would be arround 1964 , when Mary departed from the lable.
I wonder if her version of When I'm gone was the planned follow up single to My Guy.?

Yes Michael, it was planned to be her follow up to 'My Guy' and as Mary was on a winning streak I can but guess that it would have been a top 10 smash. Oh Mary!

Yes, I also think that Miss Wells version of "When I'm Gone" would have been a huge smash (especially in The US), as might have been "Whisper You Love Me Boy" which was also planned as a follow-up. In fact I think that Mary's version of "Whisper" might have been as big in The UK as "My Guy", based on the fact that the version by The Supremes became so popular that it got included on The UK version of their "Greatest Hits" LP.

Maybe there is some parallel universe out there where Mary never left Motown in '64 that we could visit to find out.

She toured yhe UK on 64 and it may have been with the fab 4. But she had left Motown by then. However if Mary had had some 45s issued by UK Motown I'm sure they would have been huge.
I guess Motown blocked her records and wanted to stiffle her new career.

Does anyone know if Brenda Holloway was signed by Motown after Mary Wells quit the company?

Apart from the Supremes, it seems to me that Brenda was the biggest beneficiary of Mary's departure.

Mary left & Brenda signed both in 1964. There may have been some crossover but I don't know for sure.

According to DFTMC, Mary was the first to record these songs:-

It seems the Supremes, as well as Brenda Holloway and others, benefitted enormously from the departure of Mary. And, I have to say it, Mary's original versions are superb.

Oh Eric, Mary made one hell of a mistake when she left Motown. Her material was first rate and she would have ruled as queen for years giving Ross a run for her money.

Made a nice CDr of " Vintage Stock" and in doing so I realised that this track had passed me by somewhat. It's quite nice too.
