I really love the Isly Brothers vocals on this classic alt version of Jimmy Ruffin's Broken hearted. I have Jimmy' s final spin on this track burnt in my mind. Even though the Isley's has a more positive message about troubled relationships, Maby people connect more with sadness and pain in a break up. After all ,  who really feels positive about anything when its over. As much as I like this track ,. Changing it into a dark message about a broken heart was clearly more effective. But who knows? The Isley' s version never got a chance to compete untile about 50 yrs later

Yes Michael, I'm sure that 'Smile' would have been a hit but we will never know. I still love Jimmy's 'Brokenhearted' but IMHO the Isley's just edge in front.

Now this is just to difficult to call as I love Jimmy's Broken hearted too. However I do prefer Jimmy's spoken intro to his original.
