Back in the day when records were records, I mean 7" vinyl singles, there were a great many that got a huge amount of plays on BBC Radio 1. However no amount of airplay could turn the record into a chart hit it if the listeners did not buy it. There was no such thing as an airplay chart back then. Such records were known as 'turntable hits'. Out of thousands I recall three that I loved that fell into that category. 'I Got A Feeling' - Barbara Randolph, 'Wild Night' - Martha Reeves & 'If It Feels Good Do It' - Della Reese. They were played to death and I loved them but I was in the minority as they all flopped. Out of the three I mentioned I think that Barbara got the most plays as Fluff, Rosco & of course Timmy Bannockburn were all behind it but sadly - nothing! Why?

I remember Rosco playing it a few times on Radio One around 1969/70 and maybe TB too, when it was reissued in 1971. I'm not so sure about when it was originally released as my Motown obsession didn't really start to form until late '68. Why it never charted is a complete mystery to me as it was a hugely popular record around my part of the world by the time it was reissued.

Sometimes the problem with these "turntable hits" was that the record distributors failed to get the discs into the shops when they were getting airplay, alternatively, with the reissue, it could be that the record sold well but not in the shops whose sales went to compiling the chart.

Four Tops version was a big record in my "entry" into Motown....subsequently found Barbara's version hard to get into....good, not great.

I first heard the Four Tops version in the summer of 1967...Tmg 601 issued March 1967.
Tmg 628 ....Barbata Randolph issued Nov 1967.

I first became aware of "Tamla Motown" in that 1967 summer, aged 12, spending mornings at local swimming baths and afternoons playing Monopoly listening to my older friends playing their 45s ( mostly Soul records as the eldest was frequenting a local disco).
These records were repeatedly played on the old Danset player.
I'd heard a few A sides via Radio ( chart items) but had no idea then about labels other than what I had in my POP collection.
I was attracted to the B sides of this funny sounding label...no idea what TM stood f or.
I remember things like " With a child's heart", " Until you love someone ", " There's no love left", " Put yourself in my place" ( DRATS), and several more.
" I got a feeling" was one of them.
I was hooked......I vividly remember telling my friend tbat I'd heard the Four Tops " 7 rooms of gloom" on the radio....I was on my way.
