More Yvonne Fair
« on: February 04, 2020, 04:57:08 am »
A couple of years ago, I had high hopes of getting an Yvonne Fair CD released - we even had a suggested title: It Should Have Been Yvonne Fair.

A trawl of the Motown vaults threw up some unreleased (and, in some cases, unfinished) tracks - all of which were fabulous but there weren't enough of them to make a CD collection viable. Several of these have appeared on compilations of unreleased material.

I forget the name of the book but there was a (possibly 2 volume) tome listing released tracks by soul artists. It included some unreleased track titles, too. I copied down these titles by Yvonne Fair:-

FUNKY MONKEY
OH WHAT A GOOD MAN HE IS
I WILL STILL BE AROUND
WHEN THE WORDS FROM YOUR HEART GET CAUGHT
I CAN'T LET HIM GO
DANCING IN THE STREET
YOU
THEN WE CAN TRY AGAIN

They all date from 1968. The Dancing In The Street track ties up with the recently released version by Ivy Jo Hunter.

After It Should Have Been Me and the critical success of her first Motown album, Yvonne (in a Blues & Soul interview) mentioned that a follow-up was in production. It even had a title (A Real Funky Mother Trucker?) and, presumably, Yvonne was working with Norman Whitfield again. Does anyone know what was going to be on this album?

I'd like to try again to get an Yvonne CD considered.

Anyone have any more details that may help me in my quest?

A vaulted lp on Yvonne produced by Norman Whitfield, would be very interestimg , especially from that timeline. Correct me if I'm wrong but outside of Ain't no sunshine since you've been gone by Ross& Supremes on yheir lost set is the only vaulted track from Norman's Psychedelic/ funk period to see the light.

Most of the tracks mentioned here either have no vocals and never did or were overdubbed - there is certainly not enough to do a full CD on Yvonne unless you want to pay £12.00  for one or two tracks

Kind reply from Andy Skurow. If anything had vocals before 1969, it would have been on the Motown Unreleased sets. Anything after 1970 would still be in the vaults.  Unfortunately, most of those tapes would take a lot of time and money to research. Lets revisit this in April or later in the year.

Digging back through old communications regarding Yvonne Fair, I came across some song titles, apparently from the Motown vaults. Knowing Norman Whitfield was working on a second album with Yvonne, I was not surprised to see these titles:-

MA
EARTHQUAKE SHAKE

Another title, that almost foxed me, was:-

MY FATHERLESS SON

This one was composed by Vernon Bullock/ Johnny Bristol/ Jack Goga/ and Pam Sawyer.

There is a version of it here and I can just imagine Yvonne tearing it up:-

One wonders what else is waiting to be discovered.

The best version of Ma was Rare Earth's. If Yvonne Fair has a vaulted version, I'll hold my judgement, because I can just hear her tearing that one up. Earthquake shake was a forgettable track by Undisputed Truth. I think Yvonne would give it the energy that it was lacking.

'My Fatherless Son' is a really strong track. Shades of 'Love Child' of course. Yes, I can just imagine Yvonne belting it out.

I like My Fatherless son too. I haven't played it in a while by the Four Tops, So now that its being mentioned as a possible missing vault track by Yvonne Fair , I'll have to revist it.

Apparently, there are some "live" recordings of Yvonne sitting in them thar vaults. Universal isn't too keen on releasing these, as the musicians will need to receive their due and it isn't easy to identify who is playing on each track.

Amongst the short list of songs by Yvonne in the vaults are:-

IF I WERE YOUR WOMAN
BAND OF GOLD

If only.....!!!
