In The Vaults
« on: October 27, 2019, 09:17:30 am »
I know Tammi recorded Green Grow The Lilacs. Has anybody heard this?

I thought it had been announced that there were no more Tammi tracks in the vaults. Having seen more titles mentioned, I'm wondering if this assertion still holds true.

Anyone know?

It took a while to find it, but the information comes from TCMS 9:

"After the failure of We've Got A Way Out Love, Marvin brought the Originals another tune: Baby I'm For Real. But the company had other ideas. They planned an album around Ron Miller's Green Grow The Lilacs, which had already been cut on Tammi Terrell, Soupy Sales and Jonah Jones."

I'd love to hear it!

Thanks Eric. I wonder if it's still in the vaults and if so why was it not included in the Anthology?

There are no vocals on the tape logged to Tammi in fact that tape now contains the Jonah Jones so my guess is that if she did lay a lead vocal down then it was overdubbed by JJ

In fact further investigation reveals that it was going to be a Marvin and Tammi duet - Tammi's vocals were laid and Ron Miller demo'd for Marvin, Ron's vocals were wiped out by the horns of the JJ version and Tammi by the eventual BG's that appeared on the JJ version another case where for the sake of a piece of tape Motown denied us with a possible classic

Thanks for that forensic examination, Paul.

You can't help shaking your head in wonder at what might have been.

I've always been curious about Jonah Jones' For Better Or Worse. It was clearly meant to be a vocal number, yet the first version is an instrumental by the trumpeter. Could this have been another instance where a recorded vocal was erased?

I'd forgotten about that version Mr Grape.

Found it on YouTube … interesting video too, though I was wondering whether I'd stumbled upon something rather dodgy at the end!!   :)

Well, Roger, that was a peculiar ending, I'll agree.

I had it in my head that the only vocal version was a "live" take, so well done Grape for finding that. It's a nice song.

That "woo woo" backing vocal reminds me of something, can anyone else hear it?:-

Thanks Guys ...I remember the Sups & Temps version so well as I sent it as a Saturday Sound on my niece's wedding day ...in her case it was 'for worse' as the marriage only lasted a year...!!

Grape :)

Emmm looking at the two versions they are recorded VERY close together only a couple of weeks before them but alas no vocal from Jonah although I have to say from what I've heard from Mr Jones he has the voice for a trumpeter
I do love this track though and it makes me wonder why no other versions are about - it would have made a great Marvin and Tammi coupling although by then she was already very ill.
