Second-hand shops - the precursors to today's charity shops, I suppose - were my favourite haunts.
One of the best days of my teenage collecting years, was when I hit such a shop not long after somebody had disposed of their record collection. In one swoop, I gou The Artistry Of Brenda Holloway, EPs by The Marvelettes and Kim Weston, and much else besides.
I worked for a small independent record shop in Enfield, as a schoolboy, and the owners bought the entire stock of a closing down East End record shop and had it shipped to Enfield. There were TMG singles, Motown on Oriole, and tons of things I hadn't come across before. Got some interesting things then, too, like the Honest Men (ugh). That East End record shop was like another that used to exist in Holloway Road, that stocked albums and singles going back years.....
Happy times.
Where do collectors go these days?
