Welcome/Information/Notices / Motown Anthologies I didn't know about
« on: February 12, 2024, 12:46:03 am »
Hey guys. I haven't posted for a while. I was locked away in a mental sanitarium facility called America.
SeriouslyThis past friday, I purchased 6 cds from Dusty Goove . im out about $80 but , I found some gems that I put off buying for some time.
Marv Johnson's Anthology, Patrice Holloway Anthology " love Desire " and two more Kent Anthology issues. The Spinners2 time around Anthology   and part 2 Of The Contours featuring Dennis Edward's 65 - 68.
I'm loving it. How did I miss these two?

This caught my attention right away. Most covers of this song stuck with the traditional arrangemet of the Righteous Brothers original. The Charmels turned it into a stax funk session. One of the members, Barbara McCoy had me thinking for a moment that she was the same singer who later sang lead with Ecstacy, Passion and Pain in the 70s. No that was Barbara Roy. Unless she changed her name later. She sure sounds like her. The pianist on this track even sounds like the same session man who recorded with Ecstasy Passion and pain. Barbara Roy's solo disc Touch me, comes to mind. That piano that pops at you, with one chord. Cool.

This is new to me as well. Ytube seems to be the only channel where you can find these rarities. Most of them on scratchy old 45s. It's ok. We know we won't find them elsewhere.

Temptations / Re: temptations MOR. or what?
« on: November 15, 2022, 02:37:24 am »
Well guys, since we brought up the Temptation's Mellow Mood. I will say that it was beautifully produced as far as orchestration go' s. The Temptations displayed a surprising amount of magic to these standards, especially Paul and David. To me David and and the Temptations cover of What now my love was outstanding. It recieved a lot of air play on R& B stations and everybody went crazy over it. Loved it.
I really want to know who' s idea it was to include I' m ready for love on here? It certainly didn't put me in a Mellow mood. It was a good LP but not even compatible to The 4 Tops Hello Broadway LP that still has yet to debut on CD.
I have  sampled the digital release of the tops Broadway LP. I was pleasantly surprised to find the complete original track of Make someone happy In tack. There was an extra spoken word verse by Levi inclued there.
I didn't know about this till now. As the song fades Levi comments" the world can be so cold". It was edited out of the original release. I suppose Motown didn't want any type of political messages included on the their songs. After all Berry wanted to appeal to the main stream cross over market.

Ooh poo! John I bet you wouldn't mind hearing Blinky cover a mor track. I know I wouldn't mind.
Seriously you made some interesting comments on the surviving Temptations vs The surviving 4 Tops.I love the Temptations not only for the vast quality of music that they recorded but for puting together at least 3 dynamic singers on lead in one group. All of which can be credited singing lead on super iconic tracks that established the Temptations sound. I think that is why they endured and became so popular. I respect and love Otis , and Duke. It has to be taking an emotional toll to be the soul survivers of all that incredible history.
I wish them well, but I couldn't see myself attending
a group that is no more than the groups that portray the real thing in Broadway Bio- musicals.
Especially after the Soul survivers pass.
As far as which group is better. I won't go there. I do think the 4 tops may have certain edges over the Temptations as far as being able to accurately cover other genres of music. The 4 tops had already been around for about 10 years performing and recording before they signed with Motown in 63.. I understand that they were classically trained where as the Temptations were raw. Mor may not be most members cup of tea but Levi and the Tops could handle it on the level of the top crooners of the day. Their covers of pop tunes were often better than the original versions.  Bob Dyland once commented , it's all in levi's phrasing in his interpretation of the song. He used Bernadette as an example. I even read somewhere that levi could sing opera. I never heard him do it, but I think he could. As far as Duke singing My way live. I' m not sure that you didn't like it because it is a mor track or if it's just this version that made you cringe ,or both.
Initially when I sampled it I liked it. I never heard Duke sing solo before. After 50 years never.
I don't think his singing was that bad. I do admit that I couldn't get through the whole track as his voice begain to crack when.his emotions started going off the handle midway through. Then there were too many encores of the chorus. Some serious editing was needed here.

Omg . It almost is shout!  The irony is, the same title with a similar sound was recorded by the Isley Brothers on the Soul on the Rocks LP. I wonder if the later version is a dramatic re- work by Norman. He was good at doing that with his material.

Temptations / Re: Temptations on Ed Sullivan

HI John.
I just recently had my yahoo account restored.. There were some hacking issues that no one could explain. Yahoo' s tech department decided to block the account for a few months. No one could get in, including me. As Joan would say in Straight Jacket, " I went through Hell!.
I know how you feel about songs that are not dance floor shakers. I remembrr watching this moment of the Ed Sullivan show. Yes as someone else stated it was a turning point in time for the Temptations. David left and Paul was suddenly takin  away from us.
I didn't care for his track at the time. It seemed dated and out of step with their new dirrection.
I don't think it's in a MOR catagory. More like their mid- 60s .It grew on me over time. Now it's a classic. I do like the orchestration here. I read all the replys to this topic before I decided to post my view.  As another member stated it would be nice to have a compilation of all the Motown appearances from ED Sullivan. Vedio and audio CD combined. I'm not sure who owns the rights to this package or what kind of copywrite deals Were arranged between Ed Sullivan and Berry Gordy. Both shrewd businessman. businessmen.

In Memoriam / Re: Lamont Dozier - RIP

Hi John, Thank you.
Now I'm seeing a lot of past post that I missed. I don't have a problem with responding to post. I can locate the reply icon.
I still have an issue with finding the post icon. I thought it would be at the top of the page to the right. My eyes are getting worse with age . I need a microscope to read the tiny print. One topic on the 4 Tops, featured vedios of their past appearances on the Mike Douglas show. There where options to click( like) on FB or twitter but no options to post a comment on Motown Treasures. Forgive my ignorance but I must be missing something regarding format???.

I haven't posted anything for a while.  The sudden sad news of Lamont Dozier's passing, gave me the need to bound with others, who might be moved by this the way I am. I posted a tribute to Lamont on my facebook page , so moved in the moment that I forgot that I only had two FB freinds who are knowledgeable about Motown. This really came to light, when one freind responded in a personal email to me saying, " I had no idea that Lamont Dozier was behind so many hits, I really loved his work with Little Anthony & the Imperials".(cringe).
I have favorite playlist of my music icons Motown and others. I realize that they are all ageing and their music will go on perhaps forever. Having them here with us gives me a warm feeling of having something very pleasant from my past. A little bit of hope that the magic is still here to cling to.  Sorry about the mush. Just processing my grief. R. I.P. Lamont Dozier.

Isley Brothers / Re: Isley Brothers Sing Motown
« on: August 09, 2021, 10:27:33 pm »
John, since you threw a left curve by including Rumor as a cover, I think I'll throw one too. I love their version of That's the way love is. Gladys knight & P covered it , Marvin had the big hit on it ,but The Isley's was much more superior. I thought their covers of Nowhere to run and Stop in the name of love were a nice try but no where near the quality of the original versions.Put yourself in my place is one of those HDH songs that comes across as suttle and innocent. If you think about it's message ,it is as deep as Come See about me. CSAM wasn't just about missing a lover but one could interpret it as checking up on a friend's loneliness &  depression problem. Put yourself in my place really sounded the same by any Motown artist. They re- cycled the same track backing 3 times instead of creating a new level of individual identity for each artist that covered it. I Hear a symphony wasn't particularly one of my fave Supremes songs.
. I didn't hate it , I just thought it was bland compared to things recorded the previous year. With that set in my mind, at first I wasn't even interested in a cover version of that  song by of all people the "Twist&Shout" Isley Brothers. Unimaginable! I played it one time. Then again. It started to really grow on me the more I played it. What got me hooked was the sweet string arrangement. I love how the orchestra fades out near the end and just allows the heavenly strings to take the track out. Lovely. I don't want to even compare The Isleys with Kim Weston. I do think if HDH would've arranged Take me in your arms and Rock me for The Isley's ,it would've come across the same way that Stop in the Name of love/ Nowhere to run ended up for them. That said. When The Isleys covered Take me in your Arms it was arranged & produced by Ivy Jo Hunter and Mickey Stevenson. Wow, what a difference in production makes. They brought out the energy that Ron Isley was famous for. Those plucking guitars were moving as fast as the high energy bongos. This is what you're supposed to do when you try to cover Kim's song. In my book Kim is a separate entity from The Isley's cover as The Isleys creative team had come up with a new song that sounds dramatically different from the original. Not just different or even  better but Damn good.

Isley Brothers / Re: Smile Please
« on: August 09, 2021, 09:23:46 pm »
I really love the Isly Brothers vocals on this classic alt version of Jimmy Ruffin's Broken hearted. I have Jimmy' s final spin on this track burnt in my mind. Even though the Isley's has a more positive message about troubled relationships, Maby people connect more with sadness and pain in a break up. After all ,  who really feels positive about anything when its over. As much as I like this track ,. Changing it into a dark message about a broken heart was clearly more effective. But who knows? The Isley' s version never got a chance to compete untile about 50 yrs later

Isley Brothers / Re: Motown Fav?

John, If we're talking about Motown songs in general that would be impossible for me , their are just too many. Since you Listed this track from The Isley's Soul on the Rocks, I think I'll chose one from that stellar set. Got to have you back just blew me away with it's High-energy. No pun on the group by that name.
