Four Tops / Re: AI Four Tops - I Need You Back
« on: March 08, 2026, 04:56:22 pm »
there are FIVE "Tops" on stage!!   :D

Roger

Thilly Roger... that's just AI having a fifth body growing out of a Fourth Top.

I saw this set on the web this morning and have planned to buy it. It looks like it's got several tracks that haven't been included on other recent Brit Girl collections that come out.

Plus, Grapefruit (via Cherry Red) always puts out great sets on all kinds of music!

The scariest part of AI is its ability to create something out of nothing. When it comes to Motown, it actually makes me sad.

I’ve mentioned this here before, but those AI mixes labeled "Unreleased Version!" or "Alternate Mix!" are so incredibly misleading. Just SAY what they are. Lately, the YouTube algorithm has been inexplicably feeding me videos from 12, 15, even 18 years ago. It’s a reminder that things last on YouTube--they don't disappear. When someone posts an AI version of a song and presents it as "previously unreleased," they are lying and muddying history. A little internet research would prove these aren't "rare finds" at all. I wouldn’t care if people posted them as "AI Remix!" or "I’ve always wanted to hear these two sing together!"—but...they don't. That soul singer you "discovered" is just a much slicker version of that same deception.

At the same time, I often think: wouldn’t it be cool to go to a VR+AI version of a 1966 concert? You’d experience it (mostly) as it was, but you’d know up front that it wasn’t real. That’s the difference to me. One would be an immersive tribute, but the other is a total fake. We've got to be able to tell the difference if we want the real history--Motown history--to survive.

Yeah, WTF?

Also, I wonder what funeral Diana was going to? She looked devastated...

The one thing that seems odd about these AI shorts is when there are people in the background who do NOT look like they're existing in 1967. People in shorts and sleeveless shirts? Nope. They should leave along with Miles Davis!

Yes, I have that CD, too! I believe it was from that booklet that I learned that Kathe provided the singing voice of Mark Lester's "Oliver" in the 1968 film.

I can't help but think that Kathe came to Motown in part because she was another tall blonde singer who caught Berry's eye, but... that's probably not what happened. Probably.

I don't particularly understand why in 2021 (when that video was posted) or even today in 2026 (because it still happens) that people post videos of their turntable spinning vinyl while they pick up the audio coming from what seems to be crappy speakers using the microphone on their cell phone so that the music sounds like utter sh!t. If one is going to share rare music, wouldn't you want it to sound its' best? If you're gonna share something like that on YouTube, make a better attempt--maybe even research and invest in some equipment that would do a direct feed from the turntable to your phone? Pops and ticks don't bother me, but music that sounds as though it's coming from inside a can bugs me.  >:(

Marvelettes / Re: When You're Young And In Love (Spoken Intro)

I'm not saying "I'M RIGHT!" but... that sounds like Wanda to me. I think it would've made a great "stereo LP version" but probably a distraction on a mono single version. The song has long been one of my favorites and that find was more icing on the cake!

OK, so Andy Williams was never any kind of hep-cat. I don't think he ever professed to be. That said, I suspect he had a great love for the Motown artists and really enjoyed having them on his show and singing with them. There's a video on YouTube of him and The Temptations singing "It's Your Thing." It's not half bad! And Andy is dressed in a Tempts' stage outfit. Couldn't get away with that when he duetted with The Supremes! HA!

I discovered this soundtrack years ago by watching the movie--and then realizing it was Gladys Knight and The Pips! There's a lot on there to enjoy and Curtis Mayfield and GK&TP made for a good connection!

I must admit, I felt bad when I first read this thread. I don’t want sites like this to disappear! I visit this site regularly and read and react when I feel something. However, it seems like there’s not much to discuss anymore. This site is definitely different from SDF (and I’m sure that’s the intention!), but I feel like I can express myself here without being attacked or ridiculed, which sometimes happens on SDF. I love Motown and I’m a big Supremes fan, but I don’t want to talk about Diana’s panties again with the same people. I think what I’m finding here (and on SDF) is that I don’t have much to contribute anymore. Sure, it’s occasionally interesting to read what people are saying, but maybe they’ve already said it all--twice--or maybe I just don’t feel like adding my two cents.

The biggest problem here (and on SDF) is that there’s just nothing new to discuss. New releases definitely spark conversations. If there’s nothing new out there, then the discussion turns to trivial nonsense, which is more of a problem on SDF than here.

As an aside to this topic, I'm sad to hear that Snakepit never heard back from Neil Rushton about West Grand's CFOM. I took Paul's advice and emailed him about how I could purchase the CD from here in the USA. Neil responded within a few days of my sending an email and now I have a way to purchase. I understand Snake's disappointment and frustration, but... I think not promoting releases such as West Grand's add to why there's no activity on sites such as this. The biggest mistakes Universal has made in the last 20 years since Hip-O is not promoting their product. I think Universal and West Grand need all the help they can get!

'60's Supremes/DRATS / Re: McArthur Park (Alternative Mix)
« on: February 03, 2026, 08:06:14 am »
It seems as though both versions were cut in the same key? I do like the Four Tops' music track better anyway. Also, if you couldn't before, you can definitely hear the Andantes behind DR on this remix. It's interesting because DR's track was originally cut for Billy Eckstine--whom we know usually sang in his lower register--before it was reassigned to "DRATS". Why did Diana choose to start singing up so high on this when she was only going to have to go higher? Ouch!

I still have issue with the lack of truth in presenting these AI tracks. Why not just say up front what you've done? In 20 years, will people believe this "alternative mix" really existed back in 1968 simply because it was posted on YT.  >:(

Stevie Wonder / Re: Black America Sings Stevie Wonder
« on: February 02, 2026, 06:49:07 pm »
I think one of the things I've liked about Ace/Kent's songwriter series is that they haven't always picked the obvious choices. Sure, sometimes it's a little too on the nose, but it's nice to expand my collection with songs from artists I might not always have.

I just created a smart playlist in my Apple Music based on Stevie Wonder being a composer of a song and the genre NOT being Motown (because THAT can make it a little too "on the nose"!) and came up with 71 tracks. I'm sure there's plenty more songs out there to create what Roger suggested--Volume 2?

This is AI-tooled. Dante Orlando has posted multiple videos on YouTube that claim to be "original" or "lost" mixes--and they're basically tracks put through an AI program. This sounds like the key has been lowered somehow and Jean's vocal has an odd "strangled" quality to it. It almost doesn't sound like Jean...but it's just been processed.

Some of this stuff makes for a fascinating listen--as long as you accept it for what it is: AI-altered music. I wish this Dante Orlando person would just be up front and include in the video notes something like, "Using my software, I decided to change the key, highlight a few different instruments in the mix, and--to my surprise--Jean's vocal through the program sounds slightly different. What do you think?" Instead, the dummy fans of the world will think, "OMG! There's an alternate version!" Yeah, an alternate version this guy created!

Why isn't Uni going after this person the same way they went after Ben from Germany who put out product that was more in line with reality?

I like it. The track having been recorded in early 1967, it's definitely got the baroque influence from the time, but it's not a flat-out hit song--a missed hit. I would be quite interested in hearing Martha and The Vandellas' cover version, "Gotta See James," that is supposedly from around 1968 and is still in the vaults.

I was thinking it would be interesting for the person who created that AI mashup to do a "reverse" version and use Eddie's backing track (which was technically The Supremes' first) and mix Jean's lead into that!
