Motown Treasures

Whilst watching a number of  William Stevenson You Tube videos , presumably made to promote his book "A&R Man", a link popped up with a interview with Jack Ashford.

In the interview he mentions his Productions on his own labels (eg Ashford/Giant), Lorraine Chandler etc. He teamed up with Mike Terry , who had left Motown to further his ambitions in Producing and Arranging, and  forming Pied Piper. I'd always wondered if he too left Motown, only to return to the label later.
However, he mentions his great record "I'm Gone" by Eddie Parker and "I can't hold on" by Lorraine Chandler He says that he got in a bit of bother from Mickey Stevenson and Henry Cosby, who were tasked with giving Jack a "telling off" for using members of Motown's musicians and "Copying our sound"...."Berry wasn't bothered", leaving the two Producers to deal with it.
So, clearly , in 1966, he was doing his own outside Productions...but presumably he was also still recording with the Funk Brothers throughout this period.....wanted by Producers and writers.
Anybody know if this is correct?
