Post-Motown
« on: February 16, 2020, 12:56:08 am »
We know that the guys took some tapes with them when they left Motown - one of the songs being My Eyes Adored You, which became a massive hit for a solo Frankie Valli on the Private Stock label. It was his first solo chart-topper in the US pop charts.

I used to have a list of all the post-Motown Frankie Valli and Four Seasons tracks that were Jobete published but, alas, I can't remember what those songs were.

Can anyone help me out?

"Who Loves You" was definitely one of them.

Their #1 UK Hit "December '63" was a Jobete song, as was the "B" side "Slip Away" …. label scans at 45Cat ….

Whilst taking of the Four Seasons' Motown days, this thread over at SDF might be of some interest:-

Not a lot of people know that.

Thanks Eric.  I knew Frankie's version was the original but I have never heard it before.  Sounds a bit strange with a male voice.

Frankie recorded it first but Odyssey had the first released & best version. The Lopez sisters had really unique voices & style. RIP.

According to Wikipedia:-

"Native New Yorker" is a disco song written by Sandy Linzer and Denny Randell. It was first recorded in 1977 by Frankie Valli and released on his album Lady Put the Light Out. Later in 1977 the song became a hit single for the soul dance band Odyssey, which reached No. 3 on the U.S. disco chart. Odyssey's "Native New Yorker" also went to No. 6 on the soul chart and No. 21 on the Billboard Hot 100. It reached No. 5 on the UK Singles Chart. It was also recorded by Esther Phillips in 1978.

---
So, it was just an album track for Frankie. This highlights the quality of the songs and production on his first solo albums post-Motown. I managed to collect them all on CD a while ago and was pleasantly surprised by how good they were. Well worth exploring!

I would concur with that John.  "If You're Looking For A Way Out" is so beautifully haunting and soulful.
