Nice way to remember Dusty, John.

My favourite is a toss up between Goin' Back and Some Of Your Lovin' - Dusty's cover versions of these songs are wonderful, although I also love the original Some Of Your Lovin' by the Honeybees (aka the Cookies under another name).

Dusty recorded so many songs that became classics and others that should have been! This was her first flop!

As mentioned above, some of Dusty's cover versions are superb but I still get a thrill from the original versions. Here are a few examples that songs that "became" Dusty's:-

Dusty made a good fist of this one - and so did Patti Austin, but neither comes anywhere near as good as this original:-



The multi-layered vocals from about 3' 15" onwards are heavenly.

Love them both too. Once Dusty sang a song in nearly always became hers. One of the few exceptions is 'Needle in a Haystack' which didn't work for me. I like it but don't love it!

Actually Dusty's "What's It Gonna Be" was a reasonably sized hit in The US (#49 in Billboard's Hot-100 which might not sound great but was higher than some of her other songs including "Losing You").

Which reminds me … someone I know who was a regular at "Northern Soul" venues in the '70s told me that he was at the house/flat of one of the "top" NS DJ's once and said DJ started to play Dusty's "What's It Gonna Be" and was surprised to find out that the said "mere fan" already knew the record as said "top DJ" had only just "discovered" it.  :)

Yes 49 in the US was not bad. I'll never understand why 'What's It Gonna Be' completely misfired in the UK! Dusty only had 3 singles released in the UK in '67 and Phillips screwed up by relegating 'The Look of Love' to the 'b' side of 'Give Me Time' which I thought was a bit of a bore. By comparison 'What's It Gonna Be' sounded fresh and so upbeat. However she bounced back in '68 with her #4 smash ' I Close My Eyes And Count To Ten' before crashing again with 'I Will Come To You'.  She went the whole of the '70's with only one Top 40 hit. If it hadn't been for the Pet Shop Boys she'd have been lost forever.

When Connoisseur released A LOVE LIKE YOURS back in 2000, I was delighted with the CD collection of songs covered (and usually bettered) by Dusty.

I knew quite a few of them already but this one was new to me:-



It's nothing like Dusty but it's a quirky song that tickles my fancy.
