I've long enjoyed this song! I've wondered whether there was a stereo mix--although the mono mix released is still some tasty Motown! I would've thought the track (mono or stereo) would have been included either on Brenda's "The Motown Anthology" or "Spellbound"--the latter especially if a stereo mix existed. I've begun to accept we'll probably never know about this or much else Motown-wise.

It seems that he tune was released "unofficially" in 1998 on the Belgian Marginal Records CD collection of Brenda tracks called "Hits & Rarities" ....

Needless to say, such a release wouldn't get a mention in DFTMC.  I don't own a copy of the CD, I wonder if any MT member does?

I do, I had forgotten all about it. Was one of the first Marginal's I ever found. From HMV at Oxford Circus in London. They had Tammi, Chris, Kim & Brenda. I found a lot more later. I firmly believe that it's thanks to these bootlegs that UMe opened the doors to the vaults.

You could be right there John ... they certainly were responsible for increasing standardisation of international copyright laws.

I have three of the Marginals, all bought from that Oxford Circus HMV .... Chris Clark, Monitors/Elgins, Choker Campbell/Earl Van Dyke ... plus one of those "Detroit" compilations on Marginal's sister label Bar.  They only seemed to be available in that HMV store for a few weeks so no doubt Motown's lawyers leapt in there quickly.

And yet, somehow the German bootlegger seemed to prompt them to slam the vaults shut. I get the former and am perplexed (and annoyed) by the latter.

Getting back to "Tell Me Your Story," I am glad that a better quality (I'm assuming so--I haven't listened to the Brenda Marginal CD version since I got the Tamla-Motown Connoisseurs CD version) version finally made it out in the UK a few years later.

I also bought a few from Virgin at Tottenham Court Road and some from Jim Stewart's Soulsearchingmusic online shop. This would have been late '90's Eventually Harry & chums realised that there was a great demand for these Belgium bootlegs and of course put a stop to them. Too late as I had bought all that I wanted. By 2005 UMe had opened the vaults and there was constant stream of official releases so I replaced all the bootlegs but still kept them. BTW when I initially bought them I had no idea they were bootlegs and I doubt if Virgin & HMV knew either!
